I'm debating between these three size machines, although the 1914 and 2554 are my most likely candidates for me. Any opinions?Could some one explain the main differences between the transmissions, it appears to me that the 2554, 8fwd 2 rev is more like a regular vehicle, while the 1914 shuttle gives 8/8 with one lever changing directions. Can someone explain their preference, can't imagine needing 8 speeds in reverse. Next question, what are the advantages or dis-advantages between the live pto as the 3054 has and the not live pto of the 1914 and 2554. I'm planning on putting on a hoe and bucket and will be clearing 5 acres and doing some landscaping around the house. Thanks for you helpKevin

i have a kioti 3054 with shuttle shift. I find having the ability to reverse directions and stay at the same ground speed very helpful. i am currently mowing my new orchard for the first time. the grass is so high that i use second gear in low range and when i back up i get the same control and good cut as i do forward. also as i was cleaning up my old place to move i used a rock rake to clear all of the left over debris from my saw mill operation. backing at the same speed kept me from jerking around at a faster speed over the wood piles. the smooth forward backeard movement of the shuttle lever makes for easy direction changes. ....

Well, James Mills describes some of his preferances of the shuttle shift. It is definately my preferance over collar shift also. I prefer it for the approximate same speeds in both forward and reverse directions. One other large benefit of the shuttle shift transmission is that it is fully synchronized, allowing you to change gears for different speeds with the tractor still in motion (just like a car). With the collar shift transmission (LK2554) you have to bring the tractor to a stop to change gears as it has no synchros.
With live pto, you still have power to the pto when you push in the clutch to stop or change gears. Without live pto, when you push in the clutch, you also stop power to the pto. For example, when mowing with a bush hog, imagine backing into a spot with tall weeds and brush, then pushing in the clutch to shift to a forward gear and the bush hog stops. Not good. The LK3054 uses a two stage clutch to enable live pto. You push it in about 2/3's of the way to change gears or stop, push it in the last 1/3 to shift pto. It is easy to use as the first clutch is fairly light peddle pressure and the second clutch is kinda stiff.
From my experience, I think you would be the happiest with the LK3054 and least happy with the LK2554. For the reasons listed above, the LK2554 is not a very popular model in the Kioti lineup. The 1914 would be a batter choice if the 3054 is physically too large to fit where you need it.
Disclaimer: These are MY opinions based on MY experience with both transmission styes and both pto styles.
